Newsletters!

Each month, I like to discuss at topic that will benefit my customers. Some months that is reminder of some of the new or unique things about Gellite Candles, but often times, they are general marketing tips relating to a retail location. I will keep the most recent article on this page for the month and then after that, they will be saved out by the article headline. If you like the articles, or have a suggestion for future issues, drop me a line at

The First Burn is the most important.

When your customer lights the candle for the first time, it is important that it be burned for a long enough time for the melt pool to reach the edge of the jar. This can vary by size, but a good rule of thumb is 1 1/2 hours for each 1 inch of candle diameter. This may seem like a long time and with the long burning times of gel candles, it can be, but by doing this the first time, you set the memory of the candle as to the diameter of the melt pool.

If you burn for a shorter time, the candle may not burn completely to the edge in the future and may appear to tunnel. In the future when the candle is burned, some of the tunneling can be corrected by burning for a longer time, but repeated short burnings will lead to a large amount of gel being left around the edges.

The other important part for your customers to pay attention to is the length of the wick. They should always trim the wick to 1/8th to 1/4th inch before lighting the candle. And as you are burning the candle, if you see that there is a mushroom forming around the wick, it is best to extinguish the candle, re-trim the wick and then relight. Often times, on the first burn, you may need to do this after a fairly short period of time due to the initial forming of the melt pool.

These instructions are included on the product hang tag that comes along with almost every candle design, , but it is an easy thing to bring up as a reminder to your customer as they are checking out. Showing that extra bit of attention is what makes your store unique!

Until next month, good sales to all!

Jim
